With the decline of the Washington Consensus on development, the issue of the appropriate alternatives for the developing world is again at the forefront. Furthermore, the current advances and setbacks of democracy raise academic and policy concerns about political institutions, representation, and the rule of law in the developing world. The Project on Democracy and Development, under the direction of Professors Atul Kohli and Deborah Yashar, takes a multipronged approach to promote research and teaching on development issues at Princeton. The project has so far held conferences on the following themes: democracy and inequality in the developing world; urban governance in the developing world; middle classes in the process of development; violence in new democracies; and democracy, diversity, and development. In 2012-13, a speaker series will continue to explore democracy and development issues and Sanjay Ruparelia, assisant professor of politics at the New School for Social Research, will be on campus as the Democracy and Development visiting fellow. The project is cosponsored by the the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies and the Woodrow Wilson School.
