Elisabeth "Eliza" Riviere

(Madame Francois Gardere; 1797-1887)

From Louisiana Portraits: "Of New Orleans, Louisiana; daughter of Jean Baptiste Riviere and Marie Anne Donesan of Bordeaux, France; married Francois Gardere in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, circa 1820; they resided in New Orleans, at 905 Esplanade Avenue, and at "Chatsworth", their plantation near Baton Rouge."

The Gardere plantation was not sold until the early 1960's. My greatest fear is that someday oil will be discovered on this land!!!

The portrait was painted by Collas in 1825; as in the case of Victoire de Lino de Chalmette, we are lucky also to have a photograph from later in life.
