From Louisiana Portraits: "Of Bordeaux, France, son of Mathieu Gardere and Genevieve Riviere of Bordeaux; emigrated with his family to New York City in 1800; married Elisabeth Riviere in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; moved to Louisiana circa 1820, became a wealthy New Orleans banker and plantation owner, and Treasurer of the State of Louisiana."

The portrait on the left was painted by Collas in 1825.
