Hilary Wilder was born in North Conway, New Hampshire. She received a B.A. in Studio Art from Bates College and an M.F.A. in painting at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 2001. She is a 2006 recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in the Visual Arts. In 2004, she completed a two-year fellowship as both a Visual Artist resident and a Critical Studies resident in the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Wilder has recently exhibited work at the Atlanta Contemporary Art Center, Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery in Houston, Bucket Rider Gallery in Chicago, and Arthouse in Austin, and has participated in art fairs in Miami and Paris. Her videos have been screened at numerous venues including the University of Southern California, the Pacific Film Archive, and the Chicago International Film Festival, where she was awarded the Gold Plaque in the Experimental Short Video category in 2001. In addition, she has written catalogue essays for exhibitions at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Rice University Art Gallery.
