When not performing OSETI observations, appropriately trained observers can make precise measurements of the position and magnitude of recently discovered or poorly observed asteroids and comets. Observational data is then submitted to the Minor Planet Center (MPC), a division of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).
From January 2002 through February 5, 2004 inclusive, 1220 observations of asteroids and comets have been submitted to the MPC.
