Turbulent flow, although chaotic, is organized into coherent structures. We use a method called Direct Lyapunov Exponent to investigate one of these structures commonly found in turbulent wall-bounded flows: an isolated hairpin vortex. This image is in a plane that is a constant distance from a wall on which this structure sits. The light color outlines the hairpin vortex.
