Edelman began his career studying immunology, for which he won the Nobel Prize. Like Crick Edelman has branched out from his original work, and is now addressing the study of consciousness. Specifically, he proposes a method for the development of the brain, via a series of selectional mechanisms relying on the population dynamics first proposed by Darwin.
