Growing Knowledge about Globalization

The Growing Knowledge about Globalization project tackles the challenge of understanding globalization and then puts the tools for understanding the phenomenon into the hands of diverse scholars, policymakers, educators, and informed laypersons. The Growing Knowledge about Globalization project tackles two critical dilemmas with two critical strategies. First, at this point in time, no single scholar or institution has been able to achieve a truly accurate portrayal of contemporary global transactions due to their complexities. To address the intricacies of both the transactions and their analysis, we have assembled a project team comprising an international and multidisciplinary cohort of scholars that is committed to, and capable of, producing the requisite scholarly mosaic. Second, we recognize that the term “globalization” is fraught with political meaning. Some link it to an imperial neo-liberal project; others see it as an inherently critical perspective on a natural evolution. To aid both public and scholarly discussions of the phenomenon, we aim to create a collection of empirical products and scholarly venues for interaction that provide historical perspective, macro scope, and micro insights

Growing Knowledge about Globalization consolidates and grows knowledge about global transactions and develops tools and materials for displaying and transforming data for analysis and presentation by scholars, educators, and policymakers.

Growing Knowledge about Globalization is a cross national, collaborative effort to bring information about global transactions into a virtual, public domain for education, research, and program and policy development. Growing Knowledge about Globalization identifies existing data, creates comparable files across time and space, and employs statistical, network, and geographic software to empirically display the structure and dynamics of globalization.

Growing Knowledge about Globalization develops an integrated and comprehensive public use data base about global transactions that (a) can be linked to extant data about localities and (b) supports the production of education materials and research about the history, extent, causes, and consequences of globalization. Second, GKG employs five different venues for displaying and transforming data for analysis: a) reference series; b) conferences and research papers; c) case studies linking global processes to local outcomes and vice versa; d) online interactive website; and, e) statistical and data products available for downloading and manipulation.
