· The hydrogen atoms attached to the carbon backbone in polyethylene may be replaced by other atoms. When fluorine is substituted for all the hydrogen, the resulting polymer is Poly-tetrafluoroethylene (a) . Partial substitution by Chlorine forms Polyvinyl Chloride (b), and partial substitution by CH3 groups gives polypropylene (c).
· The arrangement of the side-groups on the carbon backbone can have a significant effect on the properties of the technical material due to their 'mechanical interference' with each other.
