Plastic Deformation

Atomic models of Yield Stress and Plastic Deformation

· Plastic deformation of single crystals under uniaxial stress show that shear-slip occurs on specific crystal planes in specific crystal directions. The diagram illustrates a slip plane in a crystal and the relative atom displacements caused by the slip process.
· The Scanning Electron Microscope photograph of a hexagonal cobalt single crystal shows the surface features associated with slip.
· For this process, slip lines are separated by about 10 nm in slip bands circa 50 nm wide that are spaced by about 1000 nm.
