Plastic Deformation

Dislocation model for Yield and Plastic Deformation

· In the dislocation model, instead of thinking about the local atomic structure of dislocations, the dislocation line , characterized by the line vector, t, and the Burgers vector, b, will be considered in an elastic continuum.
· Three conditions must be satisfied if this continuum dislocation model is to explain plastic deformation:
* The dislocation line must experience a force in the presence of a stress field.
* A self-regenerating source of dislocations on a single slip plane must be present, and:
* The critical shear stress for dislocation multiplication must be about (G/104), where G is the shear modulus of the matrix.
