Phase Diagrams

· Gibbs function versus composition curves can be constructed for all the possible phases of a binary alloy. The curves show the Gibbs function v. Composition curves for these phases at some temperature.
· At this temperature, the α- and β-phases have the lowest Gibbs free energy, and for the compositions Xα< X0 < Xβ the alloy separates into a mixture of two terminal solid solution phases α + β.
· The compositions Xα and Xβ are in thermodynamic equilibrium because they have the same chemical potential,
μ = (dG/dX).
