Phase Nucleation


· The diagrams below indicate phase transitions involving homogeneous (left) or heterogeneous nucleation.

· TE is the equilibrium temperature at which the α and β -phases can coexist.
· Gα(T) and Gβ(T) are their Gibbs functions.
· Homogeneous nucleation starts in the bulk of the first phase. Inhomogeneous nucleation starts at grain boundaries, surfaces, or dislocations.
