Free Voice Collective
Participants in the courses offered by
College is Possible! are invited to
participate in the Free Voice Collective. The
objective is for each member to use the
knowledge derived from participation in the
seminars in the production of instructional
essays or mini-research papers. In lieu of
accreditation, the Free Voice Collective offers
an opportunity for prisoners to put their
acquired knowledge to good use for the benefit
of other prisoners and the public at large.
Antonne Henshaw, one of the collective’s
founders, says of this initiative, "We are men
currently incarcerated who share their
experiences through research briefs. To educate
and inform our readers is our purpose. We
encourage the public’s feedback and opposing
views."
Michael Darby, another founder characterizes the
collective as "dedicated to education and the
sharing of information, thoughts and ideas.
Members individually and collectively research,
discuss, and reflect among themselves with the
ultimate goal of sharing their conclusions with
the society at large."
In the words of Roger Helm, a third founder, "In
simplest terms [the collective is] a group of
New Jersey State prisoners with various
backgrounds and life experiences. We open a
forum of information about prison and society
issues while trying to gain college level
accredited courses. This is a way for the inmate
population to be better prepared to enter
society."
