InsideOut

InsideOut is a quarterly publication assembled, published, and edited by prisoners. It contains original essays, artwork, and poetry by inmates at the New Jersey State Prison and, on occasion, contributions by prisoners in other institutions. Produced internally, the magazine is a major vehicle for the dissemination of instructional materials aimed mainly at young people in urban neighborhoods who may be at risk of incarceration. InsideOut is distributed to more than 1000 schools, not-for-profit organizations, religious institutions, public service agencies, and philanthropic foundations.

In the spring of 2003 HAP established collaboration with Princeton University undergraduate students-working as part of Princeton’s Community Based Learning Initiative- the first special edition of InsideOut was released in the summer of 2003. A second special issue dedicated to women in prison and featuring the contributions of inmates at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility prison in Clinton, NJ, will be available in the summer of 2004. An issue of InsideOut with a focus on Restorative Justice and Victims’ Rights is in the planning stage to regularly produce and expand the distribution of special issues of the magazine in color and fine grade paper. This partnership fulfills one of HAP’s goals: to work in tandem with members of the society at large to produce and distribute effective educational products.
