OA First Aid & Safety Training

Whenever you travel in the wilderness, make sure that you are prepared with the proper equipment and training to safeguard yourself and those in your group. This page is designed to help, but only through professional training in things like CPR and an approved wilderness first aid course can you really be ready to tackle a serious emergency in the backcountry.

Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Course over Intersession

WFR

Outdoor Action is offering a full Wilderness First Responder Course on campus during Intersession. This is your chance to guarantee yourself a spot before we open WFR up to the general public on December 7 so now is the time to sign up.

Why Should You Take WFR?

  • You get to DEVELOP professional level first aid skills
  • WFR is an excellent CERTIFICATION for people interested in medicine, field research, health care, or working in the outdoors
  • After completing WFR you can get great on-campus jobs like teaching HEART Wilderness First Aid for Outdoor Action and a new possibility to be a paid first-aider for some club sports team events.
  • This is the ONLY TIME this year that WFR will be offered on campus.
  • It's incredibly FUN

This 80-hour advanced first aid (WFR) course, taught be Wilderness Medical Associates, is specifically designedWFR to emphasize the wilderness context-remote locations, severe environments and simple improvised equipment. The course will cover patient examination and evaluation, body systems and anatomy, trauma care, environmental emergencies, splints, wilderness rescue, and backcountry medicine. This course meets 8-10 hours each day with morning lectures and afternoon skills practice including simulated rescues, daily quizzes, and a final exam. Be prepared for awesome outdoor first aid simulations!

People who successfully complete this course receive a three-year certification and are eligible to teach wilderness first aid on campus. If you are interested in becoming an OA Leader this course fulfills both the first aid and CPR requirements. The course will be held on campus to make it easy for seniors and others to participate.
