In 2011, Sakaehara Towao published the first book length introduction to the Shōsōin collection. In clearly written and easy to follow prose, Shōsōin monjo nyūmon 正倉院文書入門 provides an overview to the technical field of Shōsōin studies. He describes the way the collection has developed over the last two centuries, introduces the reference works and specialized vocabulary that are necessary for Shōsōin studies, and explores the significance of documents from an eighth-century scriptorium as they relate to material culture, the arts, and politics. This work is an excellent introduction to research on Shōsōin documents and we encourage participants to read it if they have the opportunity in preparation for the workshop.
