MAGIC & THE AMERICAN AVANT-GARDE CINEMA

Film Screenings

The Anthology Film Archives

In conjunction with the Princeton conference on Magic and the American Avant-Garde Cinema, Anthology Film Archives is presenting seven programs of films incorporating some of the ways in which filmmakers have drawn upon hermetic sources. Six of the programs will offer selected works of filmmakers well-known for their interest in Magic as the integration of mnemonics, eros, and the imagination: Maya Deren, Harry Smith, Stan Brakhage, Larry Jordan and Kenneth Anger. A seventh program combines single works of a young generation of filmmakers: Zoe Beloff, David Gatten, Jennifer Reeves, Bradley Eros and Jeanne Liotta. These programs represent, naturally, only a fraction of the important work that might be examined under the rubric of magic. We hope that this is merely the first of an on-going series of programs and conferences. - P. Adams Sitney
