To add a new synonym to the list it is necessary to specify the synonym itself, the
number of characters that must be typed to identify the synonym, and to give the
FEMGV commands that the synonym maps to.
The user can also add synonyms in the synonyms file FGVSYN.SYN. If the file FGVSYN.SYN
is found when FEMGV starts then synonyms will be activated. If it has been created
by the user then the user’s selection of synonyms will be used as soon as synonyms
are switched on with: UTILITY SETUP SYNONYM ON.
Operating system commands may be used as part of the synonym definition but they
must appear inside double quotation marks, e.g. ""!ls"" to display directory listing
on a UNIX system.
The synonym file, if kept in the FEMGV directory, will be read automatically when
the program is run. An example synonym file is included as part of the standard delivery
of FEMGV and can be found in the "demo" directory of the installation. This file
can be activated by setting the environment variable FGVSYN to the path of the `demo'
directory. The file can of course be modified and extended by the user.
Example1:
UTILITY SETUP SYNONYMS ADD ABOVE 2 R R V A
The command e.g. ‘AB 1.5 B .5’ may now be used in the place of the rather longer
command ‘RESULTS RANGE VALUES ABOVE 1.5 BELOW .5’. This technique may be used to
abbreviate long or difficult commands.
Example2:
UTILITY SETUP SYNONYMS ADD ABOVE 2 R R V A $1 B
An even more concise solution for the previous example is obtained by use of parameter
substitution. The $1 indicates where the 1st argument entered is to be substituted
in the expanded command. The command e.g. ‘AB 1.5 .5’ may now be used to generate
the command ‘RESULTS RANGE VALUES ABOVE 1.5 BELOW .5’.
Example3:
UTILITY SETUP SYNONYMS ADD PLOT 3 DR SA PLO
The command DRAWING SAVE PLOTFILE can be accessed by typing plot or plo.
