    CHAIR

    Chair: Shin-Yi Lin

I am currently a fourth year graduate student in Molecular Biology. For the past three years, I have served on the GSG in a variety of positions (department representative to the GSG Assembly, GSG Corresponding Secretary, and GSG Chair). During that time, I have represented the graduate student population and advocated for our interests. In the past two years, I've enjoyed welcoming many of you to campus during Orientation. At the same time, I've built a strong relationship with the administration, which I've leveraged on a number of issues. For example, when DCE status was first announced to graduate students, I moderated the town meetings between graduate students and the administration that led to substantial improvements on the program—for example, a reduction in tuition and a reduced teaching requirement for full support. This year, I've initiated a graduate-undergraduate student mentoring program that I hope will strengthen relationships between these two populations and may also encourage more undergraduates to consider graduate studies. I ask for your support in allowing me to serve the graduate student population for one more year.

I strongly believe that graduate students should be aware of the power we have on the Princeton campus. Whenever I attend the Ivy Summit conferences (annual meetings for student leaders from our sister Ivy institutions to compare notes on graduate student issues), the other leaders are envious of the close connections we have with the administration and the numerous important university committees that include graduate student representatives. For this reason, it is important for our student leaders to present a positive image of graduate students to administrators, to alumni, and to other members of the university community. In addition, they are responsible for thoroughly understanding the opinions and facts surrounding an issue so that they can best mediate discussions with the students and the university. Most importantly, they should be willing to put aside their own opinions on a subject so that they can act on behalf of the different constituencies within the graduate student population.

The main reason why I would like to run for Chair again is to help the newer GSG members transition into their roles as student leaders. I am excited that we have fresh faces in Assembly and new names on the GSG ballot this year. Given my experience with the GSG, I can be a valuable resource for these new student leaders. I will also continue working towards broader participation within the graduate student body in the GSG.

The other main goal of mine this year is to discuss issues surrounding graduate student community. I have worked this year with other members of the GSG to help form the new Events Board, which is a financial and event planning resource for all students interested in organizing graduate student events. I also feel strongly that the GSG should organize events on central campus so that all students, regardless of where they live, can easily attend. Given that so much of our graduate student population is spread out among the various housing units, I think it is important to discuss other ways in which we can bring graduate students together. In addition to discussing ways in which we can improve interactions between graduate students, I would also like to look into ways in which we can encourage interactions between graduate students and other members of the university community.

I hope you will support my candidacy for Chair. As always, I am interested in any thoughts you have—about anything I've mentioned in my statement, or anything else as well. I thank you for your consideration.

    PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY

    Parliamentary Secretary: Silvia Newell

I am running for Parliamentary Secretary. This past fall, I was elected as the departmental representative from Geosciences. Since joining the GSG, I have come to firmly believe in and am committed to the mission of the Graduate Student Government. I am very impressed with the ability of the GSG to advocate on behalf of the graduate student body (for housing, DCE tuition reduction, maternity leave and many other issues) as well as with the responsiveness of the administration. I believe that the GSG exists to improve the quality of graduate student life, and I would like to serve as an advocate. I excel at getting my voice heard, and I believe I would be an asset to the GSG Executive Committee. In my own department, I have sat on the Graduate Work Committee (a student version) to work to improve the situation for TAs/AIs, as well as revising the departmental rules and regulations to make them comprehensible and relevant. I am responsible and consistently attend GSG meetings. I am organized and fair-minded; if elected, I would not only keep excellent records and run elections smoothly, but I would encourage more students to participate. Thank you for your consideration!

    CORRESPONDING SECRETARY

    Corresponding Secretary: Robert MacGregor

I feel I would be a decent (dare I say even good) Corresponding Secretary. I'm addicted to computers, I check my email religiously, and I am quite competent in web design, HTML, PHP, and other internet jargon. This year I'm the History of Science rep in the GSG, and I would like to make more of an active contribution in the future. I also designed and wrote by myself the Graduate History Association website this year ( www.princeton.edu/~gha), which had been defunct.

    RECORDING SECRETARY

    Recording Secretary: Aryeh Amihay

I am a first year in the Dept of Religion. I have been representing my Dept in the GSG Assembly since last semester. I tend to be organized and thorough which makes me consider myself to be suitable for the position. I can't argue that I am better than other candidates, since I know nothing of them. If chosen, I plan to run an orderly record of all protocols, as well as record the meetings in the most balanced unbiased manner possible. Thank you for your time.

    Recording Secretary: Marina Paul

    Dear graduate student,

I am a third year PhD student in the molecular biology department and am interested in taking the position of recording secretary. I am an active member of the graduate student body as a graduate student committee member in the molecular biology department, and as a resident in the graduate student housing community. I participated in the GSG as a proxy for the molecular biology GSG rep early last year, and had the opportunity to advocate for students in my home department as well as contribute my suggestions for graduate student concerns. I think that by acting as the recording secretary, I can communicate to the graduate student body how decisions affecting them are made and the avenues through which graduate student can effect changes. I look forward to working in the Graduate student government.

    Thanks,
    Marina Paul

    TREASURER

    Treasurer: Alexandros Ntelekos

My name is Alex Ntelekos and I am the current Treasurer of the GSG and the ex-officio Chair of the GSG Events Board. I am excited to run again for Treasurer of the GSG and to help improve the graduate student experience at Princeton.

    Thanks,

    Alex Ntelekos

    SOCIAL CHAIR

    Social Chair: Jiayue (Jenny) He

Hello, my name is Jiayue (Jenny) He and I ask for your support in the upcoming election. I believe my organization skills coupled with wide-ranging extracurricular interests and experience would make me a valuable GSG Social Chair. If elected, I would:

    • Add smaller events, e.g. talent night.
    • "Spice up" current events, e.g. hot sauce BBQ contest.
    • Explore joint events with other student organizations, e.g. GC House Committee, Undergraduate Student Government.

I am organized, responsible and creative. I have organized a variety of student events in the past: from my own high school graduation to establishing a semi-formal for my undergraduate program. Since the social chair vacancy, I have volunteered to co-organize the GSG Valentine's Dance. I have always taken a strong interest in the quality of life of my fellow students. Shortly after arriving at Princeton in 2004, I founded and still preside over the Graduate Engineering Ambassadors group to welcome perspective and accepted students so they can start being part of the community here early on. I have also served on the graduate electrical engineering committee to address departmental issues. Outside the classroom, I have had a strong interest in crafts, food, entertaining and dancing. In the past, I have placed my interests to good use by being the artistic director for my undergraduate formal and being the costume director for an annual comedy revue. I believe my extra-curricular interests can be used to enhance current events.

I look forward to serving on the GSG for the year,
    Jiayue (Jenny)
