The strength of the material may be represented in a similar way. Each of the zones on the plot contains a "class" of materials: metals, ceramics, polymers, composites, etc..

The 'strength' is the yield stress for the metals and polymers, the fracture stress for the ceramics and glasses, and the tensile failure strength in composite materials. For elastomers it measures the tensile tear strength.
