Cost considerations may suggest using different types of fiber in a composite. High strength carbon fibers (high cost) may be employed in regions of high tensile stress, and the lower cost glass fibers used in regions with lower stress demand. The diagram illustrates some configurations that exploit this thinking. Again, it is important to make symmetric layup patterns if the final material is to be isotropic in its in-plane behavior.

In the diagram carbon fiber layers are 'black' and glass layers are 'gray'.
