Select a shorter tubular
column from among those provided. Measure its wall thickness and linear
dimensions. Use this information to compute the second moment of area for
the selected sample, and to normalize the measured force and displacement during
buckling.
Adjust the Instron 8501 to accept this sample for compression
testing, and set up the correct testing conditions (strain-rate
and load limits) using the MAX program that remotely
controls the machine.
Obtain a buckling curve for the selected
sample. Transfer your data to Excel so that a nominal stress/strain curve
can be plotted. Identify the stages of the elastic - plastic buckling behavior
shown by your sample. Compare the measured transition points with those
expected from the Euler modeling of the process. |
