This section introduces the topic of materials engineering and attempts to relate materials choices and the design process. Some different ways of thinking about materials and a guide to their selection for specific tasks are discussed. Examples are given of the application of this approach to specific systems. The front forks of a bicycle, spars for a human-powered aircraft and a gas turbine engine are considered. Economic considerations are also briefly discussed.
