The Structure of Solids
Introduction

· Simple solids have about 1023 atoms/cc.
· Atomic arrangements which show Translational symmetries are crystalline as shown in (a) opposite.
· Amorphous or glassy materials (b) lack this translational symmetry, although they may have the same chemistry and local order as the crystalline material.
· The crystal is in the lowest Gibbs function condition and is favored thermodynamically.
