The Structure of Solids
BRAVAIS LATTICES

· Each lattice has translational symmetry.
· Each lattice point has an identical surrounding.
· There exist 14 distinct arrays of points that exhibit translational symmetry.
· These arrays can be divided into the 7 groups as shown opposite. Within each group, other symmetries such as rotation, mirror, and inversion are the same.
· Physical properties have the same symmetry as the crystal structure.
