The Structure of Solids

· Each lattice must have a Primitive cell, (P), (lattice points at cell corners only).
· Face centered cells (fcc), F, have lattice points at the center of each face.
· Body centered cells (bcc), I, have a lattice point at the center of the cell.
· These three unit cell types are shown for the cubic lattice opposite.
· In the monoclinic and orthorhombic lattices are found base centered cells, C. These have a lattice point at the center of the basal plane of the cell.
