This clip shows another Buckeytube being struck by a Buckeyball, a C60
molecule. Upon striking the tube the molecule deforms it elastically and
bounces off. The cross-section diagram shows the elastic modes excited
in the tube.
·
Tubes are also found to have more than one layer of carbon atoms. The second
part of the clip shows a two layer tube being struck by the same ball.
The carbon atoms interact through their interatomic potential, covalent
within the layers and van der Waals between the layers. Both longitudinal
and circumferential elastic waves
can be seen propagating in the tubes.
