Composite Materials

· Similar behavior occurs in a metal matrix composite, such as that used in the Honda cylinder walls. The metal matrix melting point is the temperature at which there is a nominally stress free situation, and interfacial shear stresses develop as the casting cools.
· The aluminum matrix of the engine block has an expansion coefficient, α_Al = 23.6 x 10^-6 K^-1, and for the Al₂O₃ fibers: α_f = 7 x 10^-6 K^-1.
