Composite Materials

· Similar behavior occurs in a metal matrix composite, such as that used in the Honda cylinder walls. The metal matrix melting point is the temperature at which there is a nominally stress free situation, and interfacial shear stresses develop as the casting cools.
· The aluminum matrix of the engine block has an expansion coefficient, αAl = 23.6 x 10-6 K-1, and for the Al2O3 fibers: αf = 7 x 10-6 K-1.
