Student or athlete?
Not both
July 9, 2001
Concerning the letter
by R. Wardell Loveland (July 4), I think it is unfortunate that
he trivialized an important issue, i.e., the academic performance
of student-athletes, with biting sarcasm. I will add, however, that
in addition to the book "The Game of Life" by William
Bowen and James Shulman, a report by the Knight Commission appeared
recently that also addresses the issue of academic performance,
as well as the diversion of scarce resources (money) to athletics
that could be used for more pressing academic needs. Thus, I think
the impact of intercollegiate athletics on academic programs continues
to receive serious attention.
