Cultural Trip to Zanzibar Island: Thursday-Monday, June 21- 25, 2012

Thursday 6/21
3-6 p.m.: Travel from Dar es Salaam port to Zanzibar by speedboat.
7-10:30 p.m..: Check in at Pyramid Hotel in Old Town
- Dinner at Forodhani. Optional attendance at Taarab/other performances at Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF). Opening performances are at the House of Wonders open-air stage (dates and times TBD).
Friday 6/22
9-11 a.m.: Tour of Old Town
- Old Town's narrow streets
- Former slave market and National Museum
- House of Wonder
11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.: Boat visit to Changuu Island
- 30 minute boat ride from Zanzibar to Changuu Island
- Tour of the Old German Prison and (now) Giant Tortoise Island
- Snorkeling (optional)
- Boat ride back to Old Town
1:30-2:30 p.m.: Lunch
2-4 p.m.: “Spice Tour” to the villages and spice farms that commemorate the heritage of Zanzibar Island (travel by "matwana").
4-6 p.m.: Travel by van to Nungwi North Coast beaches
- Stopover at "Mfalme wa Masuria" ruins
- Overnight at Jambo Borthers Hotel at Nungwi
Saturday 6/23
9–10:30 a.m.: Breakfast and week's test at Jambo Brothers Hotel
11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.: Nungwi Island visit with lunch
4 p.m.-: Return to Nungwi/free time/dinner
Sunday 6/24
Free day at the Nungwi beaches
2-6 p.m.: Travel back to Zanzibar Old Town/Pyramid Hotel
- Stop-over at the Jozani Game Park, home of the rare Colubus monkey species
9-11 a.m.: Breakfast and regular class at Pyramid Hotel rooftop restaurant
11-11:30 a.m.: Checkout from Pyramid Hotel
11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.: Free time/shopping/lunch, etc. (guide available to take interested students to Old Town market/shopping area)
2:30 p.m.: Everyone assembles at Pyramid Hotel for travel to port
3-6 p.m.: Travel back to Dar es Salaam
