Princeton University is easily reached by:
plane, train, bus, or car.

By Plane

From Newark Airport

The Princeton Airporter limousine has an information counter at the baggage claim area in each terminal at Newark Airport. Reservations can be made at the desk when you arrive at the airport for your trip to Princeton. However, reservations must be made in advance for your return trip to the airport. The one-way cost is approximately $23 per person. One should contact the Princeton Airporter for specifics and reservations at 1-800-385-4000.

From Philadelphia Airport

Take the SEPTA (Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) airport shuttle train to 30th Street Station. The shuttle stops on the lower level of every terminal and costs approximately $5. See below, under train directions for further instructions.

Note. We do not recommend flying into JFK or LaGuardia airports in New York. It is expensive and time-consuming to travel through Manhattan to the train or bus station where transportation to Princeton is available. If necessary, the Airporter will go to JFK.

By Train

From New York Penn Station at West 33rd Street

Take any New Jersey Transit or Amtrak train going to Princeton Junction. (Many Amtrak trains do not stop at Princeton Junction; please read the schedule carefully.) From Princeton Junction you can ride to Princeton University (3 miles) on the Dinky, a shuttle train that arrives at the Alexander Road Station, located on the edge of the University campus. Train schedules can be found at the NJ Transit website. The trains between New York and Princeton are on the Northeast Corridor Line. See below for information on walking from the Dinky to the Carl Fields Center and Bowen Hall.

Note. The Dinky shuttle train does not run as frequently on weekends, so check a train schedule to make sure that there is a connection when you arrive at Princeton Junction. Taxis meet most rush hour trains but cannot be depended upon to meet off-peak and weekend trains.

From Philadelphia 30th Street Station via SEPTA

Take a Septa train to Trenton, Septa's first and only New Jersey stop. Change to a New Jersey Transit train to Princeton Junction. From Princeton Junction you can ride to Princeton University (3 miles) on the "Dinky," a shuttle train that arrives at the Alexander Road Station, located on the edge of the University campus.

From the Dinky to the Carl Fields Center and Bowen Hall.

It is about a 15-minute walk across campus from the Dinky to the Carl Fields Center and Bowen Hall. You are advised to bring along a Campus Map (PDF format). The Carl Fields Center and Bowen Hall are located at map-grid coordinate I-2. Both are in close proximity of the Engineering Quadrangle, home of the Department of Chemical Engineering. The easiest way to either location from the Dinky involves walking northward from the Dinky station on University Place. You will pass College Road on your left, and Edwards Place on your left. Continue northward on University place until you reach Lockhart Hall on your right, a Gothic building looking very much like adjacent buildings, with a single (not triple) archway through which you can pass. The next building on University place is the University Store, and if you reach that, you have gone too far. (There is a sign identifying Lockhart Hall, but you have to be under the archway to read it.) Go through the archway. You will see a long, straight path heading roughly east, and passing through a wall with ornamental tigers on it. Follow this path across campus (about half a mile), always going straight. You will hit Washington Road and see the Woodrow Wilson School fountain across the road from you. Cross Washington Road and take a right to head towards Prospect Avenue, which is at the first light. Take a left onto Prospect Avenue and continue straight until you reach Olden Street, which is the first road on your left. The Carl Fields Center is on the corner of Olden and Prospect and Bowen Hall is directly behind it.

By Bus

Neither Greyhound nor Trailways stop in Princeton. However, you can take a local bus from either Trenton or New York City where there are Greyhound terminals.

From New York Port Authority Bus Terminal, West 41st Street

Buy a ticket to Princeton at the Suburban Transit ticket counter on the main floor of the Port Authority (you must have a ticket to board). A round-trip ticket costs $14.65; a one way fare is $7.50. The ticket agent can tell you which gate to proceed to. Buses leave every half hour and take approximately 90 minutes to reach Princeton. Depart the bus at Palmer Square; the campus is directly across the street Walk to Nassau Street (south) and bear left. You will need to walk several blocks. At the third traffic light (Olden Street) turn right. Walk south one and a half blocks and you will see the Engineering Quadrangle on your left and the Carl Fields Center is the last building on your left at the end of the road.

By Car

You can use Mapquest to find driving routes and maps from your city to Princeton, NJ.

From the West or Midwest

In New Jersey, drive EAST on Interstate 78 until you reach Highway 206. Turn SOUTH and follow 206 SOUTH into Princeton. (206 South becomes Bayard Lane.) You will reach a three-way intersection of Bayard Lane, Nassau Street, and 206 South, turn left onto Nassau Street, which is NJ Route 27. Go through three traffic lights (University Place, Witherspoon Street, Washington Road), and turn right at the fourth light (Olden Street). As you pass William Street, the Engineering Quadrangle will be on your left and the Carl Fields Center is the next building after it on your left at the end of the road. For on-street parking, continue straight on Olden Street until it ends at a stop sign. Make a left on Prospect Street.  Park according to these instructions.

From the South

Follow the New Jersey Turnpike North to Exit 8 - Hightstown. Turn left onto Highway 33 after exiting the turnpike and follow signs for Route 571. Continue for approximately 12 miles on Route 571 until you reach the intersection of Route 1. Continue straight on 571 across US 1. Once you cross the intersection, Route 571 becomes Washington Road. Continue on Washington Road across a bridge, and make a right on Prospect Street.  Continue on Prospect and park according to these instructions.

From the North

Follow the New Jersey Turnpike south to Exit 9 - New Brunswick. After the toll booth (use a booth on the far right), turn right onto the ramp to Highway 18 north. Soon after, turn into the lefthand fork of the road, staying in the right lane (you will see a Bennigan's restaurant ahead and to your right as you bear left). You will immediately bear right for an obscured exit to US 1 south, Trenton. These three turns occur in rapid succession. Follow US 1 about 18 miles to the exit at Route 571 (Washington Road). Turn right and follow Washington Road (Route 571) across a bridge and make a right on Prospect Street.  Park according to these instructions.

From Phildelphia, Delaware, Maryland, etc.

Follow Route 95 North into New Jersey. Staying on Route 95 North, proceed to exit 7B, which is Lawrenceville Road, also known as US 206 North. Lawrenceville Road changes its name, becoming Princeton Road, then Old Post Road, and finally Stockton Street. Just keep following US 206 North until you reach Nassau Street, which is NJ Highway 27 North. Bear slightly right at this intersection. (Here, US 206 changes its name yet again, becoming Bayard Lane, but that is not our concern at the moment.) Go through three traffic lights (University Place, Witherspoon Street, Washington Road), and turn right at the fourth light (Olden Street). As you pass William Street, the Engineering Quadrangle will be on your left and the Carl Fields Center will be the building after it on your left at the end of the road. Continue straight on Olden Street until it ends at a stop sign. For on-street parking, turn onto Prospect Street.  Park according to these instructions.
