Ger102-5 ~ Intensive Intermediate German

German 102-5 is designed to facilitate the acquisition of German in a challenging, intensive, and communicative environment, building upon the foundation of German 101 and covering the structural and lexical syllabus of both German 102 and 105. The way in which this is accomplished, however, differs from these courses considerably in terms of pace, input, classroom participation, and interaction. Each participant will be required to devote substantial time in preparation of daily grammar, readings, and writing assignments, and will be expected to take on a very active role in class--in role-plays, Partnerarbeit, and discussion of literary texts. There will be considerable input, not only from the instructor, but from listening comprehension tapes, and videos, including some German TV programs, involving a wide range of vocabulary to be learned and new syntactic structures to be recognized and internalized for subsequent use.

By the end of the course, participants should be able to read moderately difficult literary texts, both prose and drama, discuss them on the level of plot and general interpretation, write short analyses and interpretations, carry on extended conversations on a variety of topics, using appropriate vocabulary, comprehend various sources of aural input (movies, radio plays, spontaneous dialogue), and express personal ideas spontaneously in writing using an acceptable range of syntax and vocabulary. Communicative proficiency in each area of language skill (speaking, listening, writing, reading) is our goal; this means that situational and stylistic appropriateness, cultural understanding, semantic range, and structural accuracy are all considered important.
