THE ATOMIC VIEWPOINT

· The Inter-Atomic Potential is responsible for the bonding of atoms or molecules into condensed phases.
· The Potential has "Long Range" attractive terms and "Short Range" repulsive terms.
· The bonding resulting from these interactions is divided into two groups on the basis of the bond strength.
· Primary Bonds have associated energies of 0.5 to 10 eV per atom pair
Ø Ionic Bonding
Ø Covalent Bonding
Ø Metallic Bonding
· Secondary Bonds have associated energies of 0.01 to 0.5 eV per atom pair
Ø van der Waals Bonding
Ø Hydrogen Bonding
