Kinetics and Microstructural Control

· Diagram (a) shows the position dependence of the maximum temperature in the hypoeutectoid carbon steel material being joined by welding.
· The Temperature distribution changes the microstructure of the material (b), and near the butt-weld turns it to liquid during the welding process.
· The final microstructure depends on the weld cooling rate. In (c) the room temperature micro-structure for a low cooling rate is shown.
· In (d) the room temperature micro-structure that results from a high cooling rate is illustrated.
· This last weld is brittle due to its high martensite content.
