The Support for Kids at Risk Program, SKAR

The Support for Kids at Risk Program is a youth educational project that operates within the confines of the New Jersey State Prison.

SKAR’s purpose is to educate and inform youngsters about the consequences of criminal and anti-social behavior. This objective is accomplished through (a) the dissemination of motivational messages into society, (b) sharing ideas with the community on how to approach children and adolescents facing dangerous situations, (c) educating youths about juvenile laws and the consequences they must face when they violate the law, (d) notifying the public about juvenile law changes, (e) explaining how the New Jersey Criminal Justice System operates, and (f) informing young people about the hazards of everyday prison life.

This information is delivered through our prisoner magazine INSIDEOUT, video-taped group discussions between trained volunteer inmates and at-risk youngsters, and face-to-face conferences with individuals 18 years of age or older. In both video taped and face-to-face conferences, prisoners share their life experiences and mistakes that led them to prison with at-risk youngsters.

Community Volunteer Advisors work with HAP members on relevant areas of interest.
