Another symbol of the growing commitment
to jazz at Princeton is the newly instituted University
Concerts Jazz Series, a project of the University
Concerts Committee. The inaugural performance of the series
took place in 1996 and featured celebrated guitarist Stanley
Jordan (Princeton class of 1981) and the Spirit
of Life Ensemble. Since then, the series has been
proud to present the Dr. Billy
Taylor Trio, saxophonist Benny
Carter, the Mingus Big Band,
the Duke Ellington Orchestra,
saxophonist Kenny Garrett,
trombonist Steve Turré and
Sanctified Shells, trumpeter Jerry
Gonzalez and the Fort Apache Band, the Randy
Weston African Rhythms Quintet, the David
Murray Big Band, the Maria
Schneider Jazz Orchestra, and Nicholas
Payton and Sonic Trance. The University Concerts Jazz
Series also presents the annual Composing
in the Moment recital, which features the ‘distinguished
teachers of jazz at Princeton.’
A number of other outstanding jazz concert
offerings are also presented through the McCarter
Theatre Jazz Series and have included performances by Wynton
Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Jason Moran, Joshua Redman, Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Fred Hersch, Jon Faddis
and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band, Sonny Rollins, Wayne Shorter
Quartet, Herbie Hancock Quartet, Terence Blanchard, Dave
Brubeck, Dave Holland Quintet, Keith Jarrett Trio, Christian McBride, Nicholas Payton, Cassandra
Wilson, Regina Carter, Jane Monheit, and Joe
Lovano to name a few. The McCarter Theatre Jazz Series has also presented The Next Generation of Jazz, featuring the collaborative performances of the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra and the Princeton University Concert Jazz Ensemble. |
