Environment Variables

Many operating systems allow the user to define a named variable and assign a value to it. These variables are known by a variety of names; logicals, symbols, shell variables, etc.. These are all 'environment' variables.

The following sections give examples of how to define, examine and delete an environment variable using various operating systems.

UNIX

Please note that there are many 'flavours' of UNIX, so this section is by no means definitive!

Define : FGVKEY=/usr/femgv
export FGVKEY
or
setenv FGVKEY /usr/femgv
or
export FGVKEY='/usr/femgv'
Examine : echo $FGVKEY
or
printenv FGVKEY
Delete : FGVKEY=''
export FGVKEY
or
unsetenv FGVKEY
or
export FGVKEY=''

OpenVMS

Define : ASSIGN DISK$V:[SHW_X.THING] FGVKEY
Where the keyfile is located in the file
DISK$V:[SHW_X.THING]FGVKEY.K60
Examine : SHOW LOGICAL FGVKEY
Delete : DEASSIGN FGVKEY

Windows 95/98

In order to set environment variables when running the Windows NT/Windows 95/98 version of FEMGV, you will need to define them in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

Windows NT

The easy way to handle environment variables is via the System icon in the Control Panel.

Supported Environment Variables

Please see Appendix A for details of the currently supported environment variables.
