The Structure of Solids
The Structure of Metals

· In an Elemental Metal, Atoms of equal size behave as hard spheres in close packed structures.
· Atoms pack in a plane with a central atom touching six neighbors to give a "close packed plane."

· A three-dimensional structure is formed by stacking Close Packed Planes. Two distinct stacking sequences are possible:

......ABCABCABC..... which gives a Face Centered Cubic crystal structure, and

......ABABABABA..... which gives a Hexagonal Close Packed crystal structure
