JUNGLE JAM #6

February 27, 2004

life is about balance, if you will. A little Ying here, and little Yang there. So, in an effort to balance out the astronomical dominance of the Yankees, New York has employed the mighty (or should I say weak) Lions of Columbia . The Yankees buy the best players…Fine, Columbia will give no money to the worst . The Yankees are expected to win the title every year…Well, Columbia isn't quite the perennial powerhouse …But then again, we can't all be ranked number one, can we? With that said…

We welcome  Columbia  to the Jungle

PRINCETON vs. COLUMBIA SCOUTING REPORT:

Princeton, now with sole possession of first place of the Ivy League and a 1.5 game lead over second place Brown, is set to take on a highly mediocre Columbia team. Although Columbia is 8-15, they are currently entering Princeton coming off back to back wins against Harvard and Dartmouth, the second time this season they completed such a feat.

Without help from anyone else, the Princeton men's basketball team can clinch the outright Ivy League championship by winning four of its final five games. Though Princeton's win over Columbia two weekends ago was its fifth straight over the Lions and its 32nd in the last 35 meetings between the teams, the victory was anything but an easy one. The Tigers trailed by 11 points in the first half and by eight points with just over eight minutes left before coming back to tie the game on Will Venable's layup in the final seconds of regulation. Princeton would then score the first nine points in overtime on the way to a 78-71 victory.

The Tigers have beaten Columbia 20 of the last 21 years at Jadwin Gym, including each of the last 10 seasons, but the 2003-04 Lions are clearly a different group than in recent years. Under first-year head coach Joe Jones, Columbia is 4-6 in league play this year and 8-15 overall after finishing winless in league play and 2-25 overall last year. On the court, Matt Preston leads the Lions in scoring at 15.3 points per game.

Princeton (15-7, 8-1 Ivy) can tie a season high five-game winning streak with a victory tonight. The Tigers have won nine of their last 10 games and 11 of their last 14 games since beginning the season 4-4.

DIRT:

  1. This week's ballhog : Matt Preston (#33) . If we can get into his head with “Ballhog,” and “Pass the ball” chants, we can take away a significant portion of their offense.
  2. Starting guard Jeremiah Boswell (#14) is shooting an atrocious 34% from the field . Make sure to remind him of this tonight.
  3. Jeremiah Boswell (#14) also has a haircut reminiscent of third grade. Let's rile him up with chant's of “Girls hate bowl cuts…” or “Bowl cut's ugly…”

Last but not least: Remember to…

- Stand during the game
-Be loud
-Have fun
