JUNGLE JAM #1
February 6, 2004
The great philosopher and scholar Axl Rose was on occasion known to utter the phrase, “Welcome to the Jungle.” Today, we here at the Jadwin Jungle headquarters follow in this great tradition by welcoming the first generation of our soon-to-be infamous club. Moments like this remind us of another Axl Rose slogan: "Duck Farmouth." (Quotation may or may not have actually been spoken by Rose) And while we're on the topic of Dartmouth …
We welcome DARTMOUTH to the Jungle
PRINCETON vs. DARTMOUTH SCOUTING REPORT:
There are 326 schools that compete in division I men's basketball. Dartmouth, being the Northeastern basketball powerhouse that they are, is ranked a mere 325th. Rankings like this don't come easily though; they must be earned through longs hours of painstaking ineptitude. Consider the following:
- Dartmouth's only wins have come against Tufts (Division III), University of Maine (Starting five players in ice skates) and Harvard (Need I say more).
- Dartmouth is the only team in the Ivy League without a league win.
-The Big Green enter Princeton in the midst of an 8 game losing streak.
Dartmouth has continued this trend of mediocrity during Ivy League play, losing to Columbia (6-11) by 36 and Cornell.
On the other hand, the Tigers started league play in terrific fashion last weekend, winning at Brown and Yale. If history repeats itself, this winning streak should continue. The Tigers have defeated Dartmouth at home in each of the past 16 seasons by a margin of at least 18 points. Also, the Tigers have won 29 in a row against the “Big” Green, dating back to 1989.
Princeton started league play in terrific fashion last weekend, winning at Brown and Yale, two teams that could contend for the Ivy League title. Their success has been fueled by both stellar offensive and defensive play. Princeton ranks third in NCAA Division I in scoring defense (55.4 ppg) and 14th in Division I in field-goal percentage (48.9%). Princeton 's successful start has not gone unnoticed. SG Will Venable was honored for his play in these past two games, recently being named the Ivy League Men's Basketball player of the week after scoring 18 points at Brown and his game winning bucket at Yale.
