- Duties
- Information about the
positions and their duties, as well as an outline of the election
rules, is available here:
-
The
Constitution, Article V on the duties of officers
-
The
By-Laws, Article III, with additional duties and election
procedures
- Amendments made in April 2005 to the By-Laws relating to Officer elections
- Time Commitment
- Each position varies somewhat in the time required for the position. The entire Executive Committee typically holds weekly meetings, attends the monthly GSG Assembly meetings, and occasionally has meetings with administrators. The additional duties of each officer are listed in the Constitution and By-laws and typically take 1-4 hours per week, with the exception of the Chair which takes longer.
- Eligibility
- No prior involvement in the GSG is required to hold an Executive Committee position and the Election Committee encourages all interested students to run for a position or get involved in other ways.
- All full-time enrolled Princeton graduate students (regularly enrolled and DCE), including degree students, non-degree students, and leave-of-absence students who were enrolled the previous year are eligible to run for a position. Also, ETDCC students can generally pay the GSG dues and become eligible to run.
- Positions
- Every position has a base commitment of 5-6 hours per month for monthly Assembly meetings and regular Executive Committee meetings:
- The Chair is the leader of the GSG. You are usually the first person the administration and the graduate student body will email with questions. You will also be asked to represent graduate students at university events, on various committees, and to Princeton alumni.
Commitment more than base hours: 10-15 hours/month
- The Parliamentary Secretary keeps the GSG meetings running smoothly. You are responsible for making sure each department/program sends representatives to Assembly.
Commitment more than base hours: 3 hours/month
- The Corresponding Secretary manages communication among the GSG, the administration, and the graduate student body. You are responsible for updating the GSG website and responding to emails sent to our gsg@ email.
Commitment more than base hours: 5 hours/month
- The Press Secretary maintains contact with campus and local media services.
Commitment more than base hours: 3 hours/month
- The Recording Secretary maintains the records of the GSG, which mainly means taking notes at our monthly Assembly meetings.
Commitment more than base hours: 4 hours/month
- The Treasurer maintains the financial records and the budget. You will also chair the GSG Events Board, which provides funds to independent student groups.
Commitment more than base hours: 10 hours/month
- The Social Chair coordinates and organizes GSG social events.
Commitment more than base hours: variable depending on events

INCENTIVES - HOUSING & PARKING
|
- Parking Incentive
- As of 2006, the Parking Office has agreed to provide special on-campus parking privileges for GSG Executive Committee officers and GSG committee chairs (Academic Affairs, Facilities, Health & Life, Campus Relations). The GSG permit allows these students to park on-campus during the day in lot 7, lot 3 and the regular graduate lots without a hangtag. This serves as an incentive for the student volunteers and assists them when traveling between their offices/labs and on-campus meetings to represent graduate students.
- Housing Incentive
- As of 2007, the Graduate School and the Housing office have agreed to provide priority in the housing draw for the seven (7) members of the GSG Executive Committee (committee chairs will not be included). Elected officers will be given priority just below the residential committees (Butler Committee, Lawrence Committee, GC House Committee, etc.) and before other students. This will ensure that as an enrolled student (including DCE), you will be successful in housing and will have a higher lottery number for getting an room/apartment assignment.
- Note: These incentives serve both as a reward for serving the graduate student body and to assist officers in performing their duties (easier travel to meetings, living with other student in campus housing, etc). They come with the expectation that you will perform all the duties of your elected role and participate fully in the GSG. Any officer who is not adequately performing their duties risks being removed from office or having the privileges taken away. These incentives may change from year to year at the discretion of the GSG, Graduate School, Housing Office, and/or Parking Office.
