          Procedure employed to choose the cover:

 

Cambridge University Press offered two covers: a burgundy cover and a blue cover.

Faculty at Chicago and around the country, students at Chicago and family and friends were asked to vote on each cover.

A strong majority (72.5 percent) voted for the burgundy cover. The following two files offer:

  1. A tabulation of the results for those that are statistically-inclined shows that no variable (except for 'students') can explain aesthetic judgment. A probit analysis confirms the results. You can email me to get the results.

  2. And, since I grant (to perestroika and non-perestroika colleagues) that numbers mean little without meaningful words, I also offer a collection of the written responses that came with the vote.
