Program Tour, continued...

The castle at La Rochfoucauld, the nearest town to the village of Marillac
During our trip to the Dordogne, we visited the site of Laugerie Haute, where this reindeer jaw remains in the archaeological deposits. Dylan is clearly overwhelmed by seeing this fossil (this was before we began excavations at Les Pradelles where reindeer fossils are common.) Dylan would have been far more blase had this trip occurred after our archaeological work.
Archaeologist Laurence Bourguignon visited us at Marillac and demonstrated the techniques in making the Mousterian tools typical of Neandertal toolkits. Although she is an extraordinarily talented stone tool maker, it was clear that these tools required a great deal of skill in their preparation. It was not so easy being a Neandertal.

Our visit to the Dordogne included an examination of the Upper Paleolithic site of Abri Pataud in the village of Les Eyzies. One of the most important sites in France, students were clearly very interested in the wonderfully preserved sediments that Roland is carefully explaining.

Marillac, a good place to enjoy the pleasures of France, play a little soccer and, of course, excavate a paleolithic site.
