Lies My Teacher Told me with Dr. Jim Loewen

The lecture/discussion will center around Dr. Jim Loewen. Loewen is the author of the book, Lies My Teacher Told Me, which has sold more than 1,500,000 copies. The event will provide an opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to hear more about Dr. Loewen's work on the misconceptions of American history as well the narratives, and history left out of many textbooks. Importantly, Dr. Loewen will discuss how his book, Mississippi: Conflict and Change (co-authored), which won the Lillian Smith Award for Best Southern Nonfiction was rejected for public school text used by the State of Mississippi. The rejection by the state to include his book in the curriculum led to the groundbreaking First Amendment lawsuit, Loewen et al. v. Turnipseed, et al. The program will provide a space for the discussion on academic freedom and the importance of history and knowledge.
