Nancy Weiss Malkiel "Keep the Damned Women Out" The Struggle for Coeducation
In the period 1969-1974, there was a flood of decisions for coeducation at elite institutions of higher education -- in the United States, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, and Vassar, among many other colleges and universities; in the United Kingdom, the first three men¿s colleges at Cambridge and the first five at Oxford. Why did that happen? Why did these very traditional, very conservative, very old institutions come to embrace such significant change? Why then? And what happened? How did coeducation work in its early incarnations?
