How to be a better outreach educator
Scientists and engineers, at any point in their careers, can serve as valuable ambassadors for the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). They have the content knowledge and the enthusiasm for their work, but all of us could benefit from incorporating into our education efforts some key pedagogical concepts and methods of engaging an audience. To be effective ambassadors, you must also be aware of pitfalls that can rob your efforts of their impact, or worse, actually turn an audience member away. In this workshop, Shannon Swilley Greco will highlight guiding principles for education and best practices to give you the best chance of success. Shannon will share some favorite examples of experiential learning (and favorite examples of what not to do).
Shannon Swilley Greco, is the Science Education Senior Program Associate in the U.S. Department of Energy’s Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory’s Science Education Office.
