Bioengineering Colloquium: Being a Journal Editor with Nature Portfolio
The Nature family of journals encompasses over 50 publications covering the life, physical, clinical, and social sciences. Each is editorially independent and staffed by a team of full-time professional scientific editors, often with extensive past research experience. The Nature Chemical Biology team specifically comprises four editors, each covering a unique set of subject areas within the journal’s scope. We conduct initial editorial evaluations of submitted manuscripts, enlist peer reviewers, formulate decisions after review, guide authors in their revisions, and commission review content, all in the interest of publishing the best papers we can find. The publishing process can be confusing and mysterious, but I welcome the opportunity to explain what goes on behind the scenes and what motivates us to do this work.
