Sermon: Pastor Héctor Herrera

Hymn: Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine!(Assurance)

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine!  O what a foretaste of glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, born of the Spirit, washed in Christ’s blood. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long: this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight! Visions of rapture now burst on my sight; angels descending, bring from above echoes of mercy, whispers of love. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long: this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blessed; watching and waiting, looking above, filled with God’s goodness, lost in Christ’s love. This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long: this is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the day long.

Pastoral Prayer

Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Princeton: O Eternal God, the source of life and light for all peoples, we pray you would endow this University with your grace and wisdom: give inspiration and understanding to those who teach and to those who learn; grant vision to its trustees and administrators; to all who work here and to all who bear her name give your guiding Spirit of sacrificial courage and loving service.  Amen.

Benediction

Voluntary: Tuba Tune by Craig Sellar Lang (1891-1971)

Today’s Guest Preacher: Héctor Herrera is currently serving as the associate pastor in Tokyo Union Church, in Tokyo, Japan. Héctor's parents were Guatemalan asylum seekers who escaped the Guatemalan civil war.

Héctor’s formal education at the University of California, Irvine helped him develop theologically through a degree in philosophy. Further studies in the M.Div. and M.A. in Christian Education at Princeton Seminary, coupled with diverse pastoral experiences, shaped Héctor’s identity. This included ministry as a chaplain assistant at Princeton University, a hospital chaplain at Arcadia Methodist Hospital, a pastoral intern at San Marino Community Church in Los Angeles, and international experience in Lausanne, Switzerland and Seoul, South Korea.

Pastor Héctor met his wife, Marie, when they were 8 years old. Later they became best friends and high school sweethearts. Their children, Hector IV (3 years old) and Margot (6 months) have brought much joy to the family.

The University Chapel is a welcoming community of faith.  We gather to sing God's praises, to hear God's living Word, to seek justice, and to proclaim God's love for all people.

University Chapel Staff: The Rev. Alison L. Boden, Ph.D., Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel; The Rev. Dr. Theresa S. Thames, Associate Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel; Nicole Aldrich, Director of Chapel Music and of the Chapel Choir; Eric Plutz, University Organist; Elizabeth Powers, Chapel Administrator; Edgar Gomez, Sexton; Lisa McGurr, Sexton
