Call to Worship

Reading

Solo: Be Thou Faithful from St. Paul by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) with Sean Crites ’22, soloist

Sermon: Rev. Stanley A. Williams, III

Hymn: Guide Me, O My Great Redeemer (Cwm Rhondda)

Guide me, O my great Redeemer, pilgrim through this barren land; I am weak, but you are mighty; hold me with your powerful hand. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me till I want no more, feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain, where the healing waters flow. Let the fire and cloudy pillar lead me all my journey through. Strong deliverer, strong deliverer, ever be my strength and shield, ever be my strength and shield.

When I reach the River Jordan, bid my anxious fears subside.  Death of death, and hell’s destruction, land me safe on heaven’s side. Songs of praises, songs of praises, I will ever sing to you, I will ever sing to you.

Pastoral Prayer

Lord’s Prayer: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Princeton: O Eternal God, the source of life and light for all peoples, we pray you would endow this University with your grace and wisdom: give inspiration and understanding to those who teach and to those who learn; grant vision to its trustees and administrators; to all who work here and to all who bear her name give your guiding Spirit of sacrificial courage and loving service.  Amen.

Benediction

Voluntary: Postlude on Cwm Rhondda by Paul Manz (1919-2009)

Today’s Guest Preacher: Rev. Stanley A. Williams, III is a native of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Born to preaching, pastoring parents, “Rev. Stan” is but one in a long line of ministers in his family that spans several generations. Rev. Williams is an alum of Duke University, in Durham, NC, where he received his Bachelor's degree in Psychology and African & African-American Studies. He also received his Masters of Divinity from Duke University in 2009. Rev. Williams was licensed to preach in April 2008, ordained (as Reverend) in January 2012, and installed as Assistant Pastor in December 2014 at Zion Temple United Church of Christ Durham, NC, where the Senior Pastor is the Rev. Cheryl D. Moore. Rev. Williams loves God, wants God’s best for God’s people, and prays that they always find it true that God is both real and relevant to their everyday lives. At the end of the day, he is just grateful to celebrate and proclaim the power and goodness of God among others that were once (in the eyes of some) not worthy to be considered as people, but now realize that God has chosen them and called them God’s very own.

The University Chapel is a welcoming community of faith.  We gather to sing God's praises, to hear God's living Word, to seek justice, and to proclaim God's love for all people.

University Chapel Staff: The Rev. Alison L. Boden, Ph.D., Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel; The Rev. Dr. Theresa S. Thames, Associate Dean of Religious Life and of the Chapel; Penna Rose, Director of Chapel Music; Eric Plutz, University Organist; Elizabeth Powers, Chapel Administrator; Edgar Gomez, Sexton; Lisa McGurr, Sexton
